Papers, 1846-1924.

The majority of the collection is correspondence but also includes military papers, reports, dispatches, drafts of speeches, petitions, agreements, recommendations, notes, legal documents, tax receipts, business papers, and letterpress books. Correspondence includes letters from Mexico during the Mexican war. Numerous letters from the Civil War include correspondents Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Edwin Stanton, John McClernand and many other noted names. Also dispatches, orders, reports, rosters and lists covering all phases of Oglesby's military career especially the seige of Corinth and military operations in Tennessee. His years as a lawyer, land speculator in Decatur, Ill. and political office holder are greatly documented through letters, business records, deeds and financial papers. Correspondents include many political names of his time. Also includes Emma Gillett Oglesby's correspondence.
